Bodega Bay CERT Newsletter, December 2021

Updated: Jan 3, 2022

NEW CERT LOGO Bodega Bay CERT has discontinued the use of its former logo and adopted the style approved by FEMA (above). Variations on the logo are acceptable, so with some creative artwork, a more representative silhouette of our region will soon replace the skyscrapers.

BB CERT BOARD VACANCY We extend our thanks to Beth Bruzzone, who recently left the BB CERT Board of Directors, for her service. The Board of Directors guides and oversees the activities of BB CERT, an incorporated 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Volunteers interested in serving in leadership roles with the organization are encouraged to contact Dr. George Flores, President, Bodega Bay CERT at bodegabayCERT94923@gmail.com BODEGA BAY READY The November 8 Program, “Bodega Bay Ready: CERT, Sheds, and Neighborhood Volunteers,” revealed some interesting facts: · Local disaster preparedness efforts began in Bodega Harbour in 2003; with HAM radio operators and volunteers getting CERT trained to establish BB CERT as a non-profit organization in 2013. · Presently there are 14 CERT-trained disaster response volunteers; 30 neighborhood shed volunteers; and 47 HAMs, 29 of whom routinely participate in weekly roll call. · BB CERT and others raised funds to supply sheds in 10 neighborhoods across the Bodega Bay with survival and first aid supplies and rescue equipment. · In the event of a major disaster such as earthquake or tsunami, BB CERT and neighborhood shed volunteers are prepared to offer assistance to neighbors in need until help arrives; and HAMs are ready to support emergency communications. CERT TRAINING First Aid / CPR / AED training for local CERTs, HAMS, and neighborhood shed volunteers will be held in Bodega Bay on a date TBD in February. This is a hybrid (combo online and hands-on) course approved by the American Heart Association. Fees will be covered by BB CERT. Course details will be provided to applicants that send an e-mail stating your interest, CERT, HAM, and / or neighborhood shed affiliation, and contact information to: bodegabayCERT94923@gmail.com.

Train the Trainer course, is now available online through our affiliation with Northern Sonoma County CERT for CERTs that wish to train others. We need local trainers for CERT, so if you are interested, please let us know. For information, see: https://training.fema.gov/emigrams/2021/1662%20-%20training%20opportunity%20-%20k0428%20-%20cert%20train-the-trainer%20pilot%20delivery.pdf?d=6/2/2021 SENTINEL RESPONSE The California Army National Guard and the Cal/OES is holding a full-scale earthquake exercise, called “Sentinel Response,” on April 29-30, 2022. It will be held in Glen Ellen. This is an opportunity for participating CERT teams to test their knowledge and capabilities in a series of realistic scenarios. We would like to send a team of local volunteers that have completed basic CERT training to represent Bodega Bay at the Sentinel Response event. Unfortunately, the CERT portion of the Sentinel Response event lands on April 30, the first day of the Bodega Bay Fisherman’s Festival, for which BB CERTs and HAMs traditionally volunteer to help. Still, BB CERT volunteers who wish to participate in both events can still do so: at Sentinel Response on Saturday April 30, and Fisherman’s Festival on Sunday, May 1. CERTs – Represent Bodega Bay at the Sentinel Response event on April 30, 2022. RSVP indicating your interest to George Flores, snorkel10@gmail.com ASAP. ANIMALS IN DISASTER The next general program is scheduled for Monday, February 7, 2022 at 6:00PM. The topic, “Animals in Disaster,” will be presented by Julie Atwood of the Halter Project, and member of the BB CERT Board of Directors. BB CERT JOINS COAD We have become a member of Sonoma County Community Organizations Active in Disaster (COAD), which is a coalition of agencies organized for disaster mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery. More here: https://www.sonomacountycoad.org DISASTER PREPAREDNESS EVENT IN BODEGA BAY Sonoma County Fire District and Sonoma County Department of Emergency Management are proposing to join with BB CERT to host an area-wide event, “to promote preparedness; to develop interest in CERT; and to recruit leadership and volunteers to work in their neighborhoods to promote preparedness.” Speakers, giveaways, and more is planned. More information to come. Save the date: Saturday, March 19,2022. Happy Holidays from the BB CERT Board of Directors
